Gabriel's Gift is lighter entertainment, for though it concentrates on a fractured family, the reader knows throughout that it is only a matter of time before all will be reconciled. This is very much a comfy chair of a book, with colorful, witty characters enduring only minor shakeups in their lives before resuming their previous paths. There's Rex, an ex-glam rock star, now underemployed and recently evicted from the house by Christine, who's had enough of Rex's inactivity and worries about his impact on their son, Gabriel. Gabriel has a bear of a nanny to watch him as well as a gift that allows him to create real things just by drawing them, though this twist curiously remains largely unexplored. Gabriel's love for his dad and mum, a little bit of serendipity, and some responsibility on Rex's part (i.e., a job) helps to bring the family back together. Revealing and thought provoking

I read 'Intimacy' a number of years ago. I'm a slow reader, but I found myself on its last pages a mere two days after picking it up for the first time. I have since read it several more times, and sometimes still pick it up at random to read a page or two in passing. This book (its hardcover edition) inspired me to read more, and I searched for other novels that might touch me as 'Intimacy' did, but it wasn't until recently that I found another.

I like Kureishi's tone, I like this story: depressing and hopeful at the same time. It does feel, as others have said, very autobiographical, but I believe that's what allows the reader to relate so easily.

I admire the protagonist, and I believe that a great many readers will as well. Why? He does something which many of us think about at one point or another, but do not have the courage to do. He refuses to settle, to be trapped by a life devoid of true happiness and fulfillment. He believes that betrayal can be a hopeful act, that life goes on and has a greater than ever potential of being what we've always hoped it could be. He defies convention.

But whether you admire or hate him, your reaction to the main character and his choices in life will surely unveil to you something about yourself, and that is the true beauty of any good book... at least for me.

CLEAR SHARP AND INTROSPECTIVE

This is the 2nd book I have read by this author and although it does not entertain to the same extent as BUDDHA the writing is clear sharp, honest and original. The story of INTIMACY is very one dimensional and therefore reads very autobiographical. There is very little characterisation of anyone in the book except the protagonist, which almost confirms the autobiographic theory. I liked the honesty, the weakness, the selfishness, the sheer madness of the thoughts and situation - it all rings very true from what I felt. It was like reading someones diary almost so the voyeurs out there will love it. There is plenty to dislike in the book but I read it in a day and a half and i dont do that often, the ending for example is weak, pathetic and superficial, bit like the author really, I am not saying this in a bad way, the character is just not very likable, no wonder his life is a disaster! Read it and be glad that you are not him.

A serious writer

This is the only book I have read by Hanif Kureishi and I can say that he writes about serious issues in life, the kind that most people like to avoid because they are considered a taboo in our society. The book is composed of one long story and a couple of other short ones. The main story is about a married couple in which the wife is engaged in an extra marital affair and Kureishi has tried to analyze this problem that what makes married couples look elsewhere for happiness. I won't call it a sizzling story but it was a good timepass.

One of the best Spiritual autobiography by my Gurudev Shri Shivkrupanand Swami. This book will take you in a complete different dimension of the Himalayas which is unknown to the people and world. In this book, Swamiji describes His spiritual journey as a child which led Him to the Himalayas and how He met his Guru - Dadagurudev Shiv Baba and other ageless yogis in the deep Himalayas. A recommended book for all the spiritual aspirants.

Book 3 in this fabulous series takes Noah,Kate and Chris to Florida in search of the Beast and a serial killer called Harbinger.The emotional breakdown of California judge leads them into danger,a lot of mystery and the paranormal touches I love about these books. I can't wait to see where they end up next!

A psychological thriller at its best

With each book in the LINGER series, there is continued tension, suspense, mystery, and best of all—solid writing.

In Linger 3: Reckoning for the Damned, Kate, Noah and Christopher arrive in Florida still highly motivated to stop the Beast from destroying people’s lives, and the lives of their loved ones—something Kate, Noah and Christopher unfortunately know all too well.

The Beast is still leaving death, terror, and destruction in his wake with the ability to dodge capture and punishment from every law enforcement agency. That alone keeps the reader in suspense, as we read on how the Beast is able to manipulate people’s lives, twist family dynamics to suit his evil motives, and mess with the characters emotions, physical well-being and their minds.

In Linger 3: Reckoning for the Damned, we are introduced to a judge from Kate’s past, and the mystery of his bizarre behavior, and his missing family. Each scene will keep you turning the pages while one cliffhanger after the other leaves you in suspense until resolution.

With each book in the series, the reader is given more insight into the well-developed characters past, and the escalating connection each character has to each other, and to the intensity of their journey.

Each book in the series is also peppered with intriguing secondary characters, with all the elements that goes into creating a great psychological thriller.

In Linger 3: Reckoning for the Damned, the emotional stakes are high for the reader, and especially for Christopher and Kate as they undergo heart-wrenching supernatural experiences. It also gives us another facet of Noah's character, as each scene peels back the layers of his well-guarded thoughts and feelings.

The writing for these scenes hits all the right notes, giving the reader an emotional and vivid imagery of the paranormal elements surrounding the story.

This is a psychological thriller at its best. A series I highly recommend.

Good stuff!

LINGER is a 5-book series that will keep you on the edge... of your chair, your bed, and your mind... It's a crime story with some darkness, a bit of paranormal (in an ESP sense), three memorable protagonists, and quest for revenge and justice. Kate is a policewoman (who becomes a former policewoman by book 2) who joins forces with an unusual pair-- Noah, a man who unwittingly became protector and guardian for Chris, a blind boy with an extraordinary gift of second-sight and telepathy (he's also missing his tongue!). The trio are on the trail of a nasty killer who, well, leaves his victims without tongues.
Note that while each book in the series is by "Edward Fallon," this is a pseudonym of five different authors--each author pens one of the books and brings something unique to every entry. Highly recommended!

About the Author
Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe is an internationally known Bible teacher and the former pastor of three churches, including the Moody Church in Chicago. For ten years he served as general director and Bible teacher for the Back to the Bible radio broadcast. Dr. Wiersbe has written more than 150 books, including the popular "Be" series of expositional Bible studies, which has sold more than four million copies. If you are looking for a Bible Study Guide for Romans, this is the right choice. It doesn't waste your time asking questions about what you can already see in the text. Many consider William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) a minor novelist who wrote in a time when George Eliot, Charles Dickens, and Anthony Trollope ruled the roost of British literature. Out of all of his works, "Vanity Fair" is the most recognizable in literary circles, although Stanley Kubrick immortalized Thackeray's "Barry Lyndon" in a film of the same name. "Vanity Fair" appeared in serial form in 1847-48, a process of publishing used to great success by Charles Dickens. The introduction to this Everyman's Library edition, written by Catherine Peters, says that the title of the book came from John Bunyan's "The Pilgrim's Progress," an immensely popular work in circulation at the time.
"Vanity Fair" centers on the exploits of two British women, Rebecca Sharp and Amelia Sedley, beginning roughly at the time of the Battle of Waterloo and ending at some time in the 1830's. The two women are polar opposites: Becky is a conniving, domineering, sometimes insensate woman who constantly attempts to secure a position in high society. Amelia is a rather plain, simple girl who trusts people too often and ends up getting her heart stomped on repeatedly. The two women are ostensibly friends, spending their youth together at a finishing school and occasionally running into each other throughout their lives. Thackeray often likes to place the two in opposition to one another: when Amelia falls into a crisis, Becky is moving in the highest circles of society. When Amelia comes into luck, Becky's fortunes plummet. This see-sawing action helps move the novel through a series of intricately detailed scenes showing off Thackeray's sense of humor, his caustic critiques of English society, and his insightful commentary into the human condition.
Arrayed around these two figures is a veritable constellation of major and minor characters, all with their own foibles that Thackeray exposes in minute detail. There is Joseph Sedley, Amelia's obese and selfish brother who nearly marries Becky in the beginning of the book. George Osborne appears through part of the book as Amelia's fianc�e and eventual husband, a vain man with an eye for the ladies and a spendthrift attitude. George's friend William Dobbin also figures prominently in the story. Dobbin is an admirable man, marred by his inability to come to terms with the feelings he has for Amelia. Other characters appear and disappear rapidly, too many to outline here. It is sufficient to say that Thackeray does not worry about overburdening the reader with too many cast members, and with nearly 900 pages in the book, he definitely has the time to adequately describe numerous scenes and people.
I do not know much about literary tags, but I will say that Thackeray must certainly fall into the category of a realist writer. His goal with "Vanity Fair" was to write a story that went against the romantic hero/heroine novels of his day. The subtitle to this book, "A Novel Without a Hero," clearly outlines the author's intentions to oppose unrealistic, feel good literature that failed to properly reflect genuine life. In this respect, Thackeray succeeds admirably by creating characters that exhibit both good and bad traits during their lives. For example, Becky steals and schemes her way through life but performs an amazingly beautiful service for Amelia at the end of the book. Does this make Becky a heroine? Hardly, as Becky does not change her ways after this event. Thackeray constantly sets us up to see a heroic act, only to dash our hopes a few pages later.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of the novel is Thackeray's acidulous wit. Everyone comes in for a drubbing here, from the aristocracy to the common man. Names often reflect the author's scorn: nobles carry such embarrassing monikers as Lord Binkie, Lady Bareacres, and Lord Steyne. Sharp is an effective name for Becky, exposing her character and incisive wit. "Vanity Fair" is full of backstabbing, lying, adultery, stealing, pride and general rowdiness, and no one is above these base behaviors.
A slight problem with the story concerns the numerous narrative digressions that wax philosophic about relationships, women and their roles in society, and bad behavior. These insertions do become taxing at times even though they often help move the story along. Thackeray wants to make sure you know what he is trying to accomplish; he wants you to see yourself and your friends and family in these character sketches.
A bigger problem for me concerned this particular edition of the story. There were no footnotes or endnotes in the Everyman's Library version to help explain the jargon or place names of Thackeray's England. While the author's use of language never approaches the level of Walter Scott's Scottish vernacular, to cite an extreme example, it is still a problem at times. I recommend picking up the Penguin Classics version of "Vanity Fair," since Penguin editions usually employ explanatory notes.
"Vanity Fair" is a long yet worthwhile read. The book is hardly unreadable, an unfair label often attached to this agreeable story. If you enjoy reading 18th century English literature, you must read "Vanity Fair."

This Is My Favorite Book (but that was not always the case)

This book is not for everyone (as the next two reviews clearly demonstrate). I first read Vanity Fair in junior high, and at the time I probably would have agreed with the comments of the next two reviews: Vanity Fair seemed slow and plodding, confusing and contradictory. When I recently reread Vanity Fair, I could scarcely believe that this brilliant, ironic, hilarious, and incisive romp was the same book as the dull tome I had remembered. In retrospect I realized why my perspective had changed: in junior high I had read the book superficially and found the plot and characters lacking enough excitement to hold my interest; now I realized that the most captivating action was taking place outside the plot in the interaction between the reader and the most important person in the novel: the narrator. I, like many readers, completely missed this deeper level of meaning the first time around. Thus, to recommend this novel to the unsophiscated, inexperienced reader (such as I had been) would be futile. It takes a keen sense of irony and certain degree of insight into the workings of life and literature to recognize the narrator's vital role and to appreciate this novel in its fullest sense. This book is not an easy read: it forces the reader to confront many difficult moral questions and provides no easy answers. But for those who can handle ambiguity and can detect subtle, yet "laugh out loud" funny humor Vanity Fair is not only a necessary read, but an enjoyable one.
(Note: Buy this edition of Vanity Fair. The illustrations which Thackery drew for this novel greatly enhance the text, and the Norton edition reproduces all of them. In addition, the criticisms which are included make for a thought-provoking read and may help clarify your opinion of the novel).

I first read this novel twenty-five years ago, and while I found it funny and excellent entertainment at that time, I didn't realize that it is also a very great book. Now I do.

Readers who've found the novel too long are, I suspect, not regular readers of Victorian novels, which were traditionally published in newspapers, bit by bit. They're always long--that's their distinction from modern novels. More than most however, Vanity Fair opens with a bang, and from the first page on through more than 800, I found it hard to put down.

Through the cast of characters we see for ourselves the pervasive greed and hypocrisy of the 19th century British Empire. Jos Sedley, the Ex-collecter of Bogley Walla, the unfortunate Rawdon Crawley, George Osborne and the immoral, resourceful Becky Sharpe are some of the most vivid characters in English writing. The narrator's voice is perfect--though hardly appealing. It's not sentimental. The "objectivity" of a journalist's timidly expressed irony feeds into the reader's need to feel smug -- so that when shocking moments come (and they sure do) we are stunned. The narrator's voice here is much more inventive than one realizes immediately. In this and many other ways Thackeray's story-telling isn't typical of Victorian novelists--Eliot or Dickens for example. In the works of those authors we always know just what moral position the narrator has. (I should mention that I also finished re-reading Middlemarch before re-reading Vanity Fair.) Comparing the grand stateliness of George Eliot with Thackeray's voice made me see just what a tricky work of art Vanity Fair is. But Thackeray, too, makes his story come to life. The description of the Battle of Waterloo is one of the most brilliant things I've ever read. It's hard to believe that he wasn't there.

In the edition I read I found that C.L.R. James, the left-wing Trinidadian author and historian--an author I admire and enjoy reading, began reading Vanity Fair at the age of eight, and re-read it regularly throughout his long life. He claims to have learned more about the minds of white colonial empire-builders from this original and epic work than any history he read. Interesting...

Turns out they were going to war and planned to use their new demon slave as a secret weapon to obliterate the enemy! _______________________________________________ Jenn was a journeyman Thaumaturge at Lenamare's Academy of Wizardry. School was a living hell. Oh, she was learning a lot, thanks to Master Trisfelt, but the Head Master and Head Mistress were insufferable egomaniacs. Head Mistress Jehenna seemed bent on making Jenn miserable with her unrealistic demands and eviscerating criticism. If this was not bad enough, the Head Master, Lenamare, had gone and got in a squabble with another wizard, Exador, and now Exador was marching his army on the school. About the Author
J. L. Langland has been obsessed with science fiction and fantasy since Junior High. Upon hearing the job description "High Energy Astrophysicist" in 8th Grade Physical Science, he set out to become one. His express goal to develop trans-warp capability, patent it, license patent rights, make money, build spaceship, go to the stars. OK, well, he got a B.S. in Astrophysics, then his M.S. and Ph.D. in Experimental High Energy Physics. But by that point, he'd realized that there were probably easier ways to make a living than developing warp drives. Turns out, it was rather more difficult than he'd thought in 8th Grade. So, clearly, the better alternative was to use his knowledge of Multiversal Quantum Topology to create a gateway to other planes of existence. OK, that was tricky too and took many years of work, but eventually he perfected Astral Projection and was able to travel the multiverse using the power of his mind. Now he brings to you, the reader, true stories and historical accounts from his adventures on other planes of existence. J.L. "Doc" Langland was raised on Heinlein, Zelazny, Blish, Herbert, Azimov, Chalker, E.E. This is an epic book, in every sense of the word.

The basic plot, without giving the game away, revolves around a young man, our protagonist, who gets sucked away from normal life due to the machinations of a bunch of wizards and as a result is turned into a demon...and in many ways it's a coming of age [demonhood] tale. The ingredients are far more complex: there's a book with a secret that two wizards are fighting to get, there are demon, religious and wizardly intrigues and a draft of different characters and magic which all combine to make a rather brilliant story in a well thought out and fun world.

The tone of the story is light, it's by no means a rollicking comedy, nor is it meant to be, but the author approaches both the story and the world with a light touch, which just makes it easier to appreciate. There are several interludes where you are given excerpts from essays dealing with aspects of the world, types of magic, layout of the wizardly council etc. and whilst I grant that these won't be to everyone's taste I decided that they just added depth to the world and opened up possibilities in both the plot and my imagination - one could skip them and not lose too much, but they are neither long nor as a say did I think they detracted from the experience.

Detail.

Firstly audience: really I think this is a book that could be appreciated by any fantasy fan, though I have eclectic taste, so to narrow the field: the world is a hodgepodge mix of classical fantasy, think paladins, elves, wizards, peasants. There is no romance line as yet. It's a coming of age tale. There are demons. There is a bit of journeying around, but in the good way. If your thinking about it give it a shot.

Secondly likes/dislikes

Likes - pretty much all of it really -you can tell the world and plot has been thought out - but the thing that really hooked me was that it got of to a running start and never really paused for breath. I started reading and forgot to sleep. It's long, there's enough meat on the bone to leave you feeling full

Dislikes- only two really: the first is that ending whilst satisfying to a degree is in essence a cliffhanger... And the second book has yet to be published .... And the second is to do with the formatting- the interludes I mentioned above come across as rather faint on the kindle, a greyer text which is a little harder to read.

Conclusion: all in all well written, edited and the length of a proper book -one really gets the right amount of bang for one's buck, so download the sample and give it a shot, if your a fantasy fan or even just into the sci-if/fantasy genre it certainly worth reading the sample and it just gets better after that.

Normally I feel a little guilty and cheap rating a book 5 stars. However, this book deserved it, hands down.

This book is so rich with irony that it frustrated me at times. Do not misunderstand, this is in no way a complaint. Rather, I was frustrated because Tom was frustrated; and while I read this book I was Tom or Rupert or Jenn and I felt what they felt so completely that I had no choice to be frustrated when they were.
Langland isn't a one-trick pony either. He delves into all facets of irony throughout the book: verbal, dramatic, and situational. So while we, the readers, feel as the empathetic character feels we can also view the situation/plot as a whole and experience the book that way.
Another plus was the periodic treatises and essays pertaining to different magic related topics. These "information bombs" allowed me, as a reader, to truly understand how certain aspects of the magic system worked beyond the sometimes statement of "it just is" that one often finds in other books. Although, they did serve to break up the plot somewhat. I though that ultimately the served to enhance the reading experience greatly.
All in all, one of the best books I have read in a long time. I was happy to see that there is a second book on the way.

I loved this book, I have constantly had a problem of finding books that break outside of the same old fantasy mold which is loved but can sometimes leave people wanting more. This book provided that in such a way that I have never seen before, and it is books like this that I love because not only do they give you a new story but they also give you new things to think about and that is what this book did in every way possible.
