Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) Life Cycle Management: Corporate, Community, and Organizational Planning and Preparedness, by Robert Jaffin

It is well known that fluorescent light bulbs and consumer appliances such as televisions, computers, and monitors contain mercury, dangerous chemicals, and other harmful components. The existing literature on hazardous materials addresses the risks attached to specific materials and emphasizes compliance and personal protective equipment (PPE)—but not the life cycle management of the materials that represent the hazards. A logistics treatment of the subject is needed to understand the underlying supply chain management principles and apply solutions to reduce overall use of hazardous materials.

Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) Life Cycle Management: Corporate, Community and Organizational Planning and Preparedness is organized into two thematic sections. Section I defines and classifies hazardous materials and covers the U.S. regulatory framework and standards governing the transport and use of such materials. Section II examines institutional and organizational program elements and provides guidelines for developing these programs to reduce liability and risk while lowering point-source pollution and total hazardous waste production.

The logistics approach to hazardous materials yields exponential benefits in costs and the reduction or elimination of such materials. It limits organizational liability and, at the same time, reduces the costs associated with hazardous waste management and disposal. This book serves as an integrative reference offering a better understanding of hazardous materials use, life cycle management, consumption, and waste reduction at a holistic, strategic level.

Sleepiness: Causes, Consequences and Treatment (Cambridge Medicine (Hardcover))From Cambridge University Press

Written and edited by leading clinicians and researchers in sleep medicine, this is the first book to focus on the causes, consequences and treatment of disorders of excessive sleepiness. Extensive coverage is provided for all known causes of sleepiness, including sleep deprivation, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, narcolepsy and other hypersomnias of central origin, shift work, and medical and psychiatric disorders. Since many causes of sleepiness are difficult to differentiate from each other, and treatment modalities can vary greatly from one disorder to another, this book helps the clinician to formulate a differential diagnosis that will ultimately lead to the correct diagnosis. Epidemiology, evaluation of the sleepy patient, diagnostic investigations including neuroimaging, subjective and objective testing, cognitive effects of sleepiness, motor vehicle driving issues, medico-legal aspects of sleepiness, and therapy are also discussed in detail. This is an essential resource for neurologists, psychiatrists and sleep specialists.

U.S.S. Seawolf: Submarine Raider of the Pacific, by Gerold Frank, James D. Horan, J. M. Eckberg

Aaaap! Aaaap! The battle-station alarm blared through the boat. Half-naked, their bodies gleaming in the yellow light, the men tumbled out of their bunks. The narrow passageways were suddenly filled with men and then as suddenly cleared as each man fitted into his assigned position.

The USS Seawolf was one of the greatest submarine raiders of all time.

Having narrowly avoided the attack on Pearl Harbor the Seawolf set out for the seas of the Pacific to wreak havoc on Japanese shipping.

Joseph Melvin Eckberg was on the Seawolf from her maiden voyage and remained with her until January 1943. As chief radioman he was instrumental in assisting Captain Frederick Warder to find and destroy enemy targets.

From the claustrophobia of being trapped under water and the overwhelming fear of depth charges to the joys of aiding the war-effort and the camaraderie on the ship, Eckberg’s account, told to the authors Gerold Frank and James Horan, gives remarkable insight into submarine warfare of the Second World War.

“It is a narrative straight as a sword, from which emerges the story of how that happy marriage of courage and skill was achieved which made our submarines more than any other group the fleet that won the war.” The Saturday Review, Fletcher Pratt.

“The successes of the Seawolf bear testimony to the effectiveness of single-purposeness and teamwork.” Jonas H. Ingram, U. S. Navy Commander-in-Chief.

Gerold Frank and James Horan were professional authors who wrote down Eckberg’s story after meeting him on a slow train between New York City and New London, Connecticut, in August 1943. U.S.S. Seawolf: Submarine Raider of the Pacific was first published in 1945. Frank went on to become a prominent ghostwriter and passed away in 1998. Horan, author of more than forty books, died in 1981. Eckberg died four years before him in 1977.

What a story- I didn't want to put it down. I am so thankful for the service of the US navy submariners.
By Tibbie
I loved this book and did not want to put it down. The incredible sacrifice and bravery of submariners is beyond what I think anyone realizes. The sailors in WW2 endured tremendous hardships- and fear, knowing they were going to get depth charged, knowing their torpedos were less than desirable, (many were duds) and they had to get to the surface to charge batteries. If they were under water and had dead or low batteries, they had to turn off the air conditioning, and many other things that made the boat liveable. Often they had to do this to maintain silence- and did it to the point of exhaustion from lack of air. Many stories in the book about heavy air, and the pressure had built up from firing torpedos to the point that they couldn't talk, that saying any words was very difficult- and they did not know if there were destroyers waiting on the surface for them. They couldn't use their periscope because the japanese were expert at seeing it- or planes could see the sub if it were at periscope depth-

Its a fascinating book, and makes you very thankful not only for the service of these men in the 1940's, but in all men in the submarine service through the ages. I highly recommend this for just about anyone. great read

Almost Didn't Read
By Albert Holden
I almost didn't read the story. I found the first page to be too "Gung Ho". I kept reading and I found it too be a well written story that allowed me to get an idea of life aboard a sub during WW ii. The portrayal of the crew made me feel like I was on the boat living with them. What caught my attention was the comment in the last chapter that it took the author a year to adjust to civilian life and get along with his wife. My Marine brother never did adjust. He was fighting PTSD until he died.
The men on the sub hated the enemy just as much as those who fought subs in the Battle of the Atlantic hated submariners. It's an easy read and a must for people who don't understand Americans' feeling during WWII.

A very detailed account aboard a Sargo Class Fleet Boat in the opening days of World War 2...
By GCamp
A detailed account at the very start of World War 2 aboard a Sargo Class Fleet Submarine, USS Seawolf, stationed in Cavite, Philippines. Included is their immediate departure from Cavite (for their own protection) and subsequent orders to resupply US troops on Corregidor with arms and ammunition that were holding out against the Japanese, the evacuation of important personnel, and subsequent unrestricted war patrols against enemy shipping. The authors paint a vivid picture of what it was like to endure many hours of enemy countermeasures (depth charging) until they are able to elude their aggressors. You can't help but cheer inside when they score a victory. A great story about a great submarine crew, and a well respected skipper who was cool under fire, Fearless Freddie Warder.

Winner of the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize for the remarkable efforts begun 30 years earlier, and which continue to this day, agriculturalist Norman Borlaug most recently joined Jimmy Carter working in Africa and in recent years tackled successful projects in China. But his earliest claim to fame was his painstaking fieldwork in Mexico during the 1940s, when the prairie-raised Iowan developed strains of disease-resistant wheat, training local scientists to spread his breakthrough methods to other countries. Working over the years with the Rockefeller and Ford Foundations, he was later responsible for averting famine in Pakistan and India, where hope for feeding their huge populations was almost nonexistent; characteristically, Borlaug maintained his sense of humility and wonder throughout: "The enthusiasm everywhere bordered on mania. I have never seen anywhere in agriculture such euphoria...." Author Hesser, an old friend and colleague of Borlaug, is well versed in the food production revolution that Borlaug helped create (encompassing wheat, rice and maize, and still branching out), and an able writer whose direct voice evokes the Midwest spirit of its subject.

One of the Quiet Heros
By John Matlock
In Jimmy Carter's introduction to this book he points out the Norman Borlang has the distinction as one of the 100 most influential individuals of the 20th century.

Dr. Borlang was the 1970 recipient of the Nobel Peace Price. This was awarded for his work in saving the lives of more people - hundreds of millions, perhaps over a billion - from starvation than any person in history.

He, as much as any other individual deserves the title, The Father of the Green Revolution. In the late 1960s, most experts said that global famines in which billions would die would soon occur. Biologist Paul R. Ehrlich wrote in his 1968 bestseller The Population Bomb, 'The battle to feed all of humanity is over... In the 1970s and 1980s hundreds of millions of people will starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked upon now.' Ehrlich also said, 'I have yet to meet anyone familiar with the situation who thinks India will be self-sufficient in food by 1971,' and 'India couldn't possibly feed two hundred million more people by 1980.'

Thanks to Dr. Borlaug, Paul Erlich was wrong.

Note that this doesn not mean that the problems are over. The Green Revolution plants take more water, more fertilizer (made from oil) than the older plants. There is an ongoing debate about biotechnology and food supplies. And of course, population growth cannot continue forever. But without Dr. Borlaug there would have been a lot more dying. And besides this just might sound like Paul Erlich.

Dr. Borlaug (now 91) lived a life filled with satisfaction, awards, and the knowledge that he has helped to feed millions.

A life-changing read
By Marsha A. Johnson (www.marshajohnson.net)
The Man Who Fed The World an authorized biography by Leon Hesser

Norman Borlaug's life, written by Leon Hesser, is more than magnanimous. It is impressively humble.
Hesser's remarkable, well-written book, is a wonderful story of the simple life of an Iowa farm boy whose extraordinary determination led him on a lifelong journey to feed a starving world. A young Norman Borlaug, scarred by the effects of the Great Depression witnessed, first hand, how food changes peoples lives.

The Man Who Fed The World is an inspiring book of one man's hope, vision, and the intestinal fortitude to relentlessly pursue his goal to relieve human suffering. And for the millions of the world's starving who were unable to personally express their gratitude Norma Borlaug, on October 20, 1970, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

A huge thank you to Leon Hesser for bringing the world this book!

Her description using all the senses isn't obnoxiously verbose like some boring wordsmiths
By rick
So its porno. Whatever. That's why I read it. The background of 50's New York is well written. Her description using all the senses isn't obnoxiously verbose like some boring wordsmiths. Maybe the pornography was added for marketing, I don't know. But it went well with her squalid living, listening to good music, eating and drinking, and hanging with her interesting misfit coterie. Even though this is a fictional memoir, I just know her real youth makes my teenage years in high school seem dull.

beatnik, not beat
By phigirl
a recent article on diane diprima in the chicago tribune (4/19/2000) called di prima's "memoirs of a beatnik" - "a sort of insider's Beat exploitation book Di Prima wrote in 1968 for Maurice Girodias' Olympia Press in Paris because she needed money badly--and quickly." It goes on to state that "It is mostly accurate, [di prima] said, except for the sex parts."
with that said, i doubt the book aspires to make any type of high-brow feminist or literary statement. the fact that is does make any such statement can be attributed to the time in which it was written. it is basically an account of a young woman venturing out on her own in times when young women did not do such things. young women lived at home, maybe went away to college, met a nice suitable young man, and got married. maybe had a job as a typist in the meantime. sex was not something young women from nice families experimented with.
this is not to say the book does not have its merits. it is artfully written, intelligent, and poetic. it's a great look at the obstacles women faced when they decided to do their own thing, especially when that differed from society's norms. it's a peek inside the counterculture that was growing larger and larger thanks to a certain jack kerouac. all of this raises the book above being just plain old erotica. as a fan of beat writing and culture, i enjoyed the book very much.
of course, the drawback to this book is that someone reading this book without knowledge of the context in which it was published will come away from it with a view of the beats that is as cartoonish and two-dimensional as the rest of society's view was of them at the time. "oh wow, look, the beats were always having sex." - "oh yeah, man, that's what they were about. coffee, sex, and alcohol. (and bongos and poetry and black berets)"
maybe that's why the title of this book is "memoirs of a beatnik," and not "memoirs of a beat." major difference.

Sensitive and Compelling Biography of the Lower East Side
By Annie Nash
Compelled to write after reading the other reviews-- I read this book when it was first published and found the sex (and feminism) secondary. This book read like a biography of most white women who chose to leave home and live on the Lower East Side in the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and even 1990s. What blew me away was the quality of the prose and the parallels with the lives of women (usually White, Italian, or Jewish) I knew who moved there in the 1970s or 80s to recreate themselves. Side by side are Diane di Prima, Madonna di Ciccione (yes The Madonna), and countless women who have had 15 minutes or less of fame in the contemporary media. This book SINGS with the struggles and pain that many women put themselves through to break the yoke of suburbia. Read it and judge for yourself. Unfortunately, it is a tribute to how history repeats itself.

Macrosociology: Four Modern Theorists, by Frank W. Elwell

Social theorists dwell on the canonical works of Marx, Weber, and Durkheim but little on the theories of the major contemporary macrotheorists. This book fills this gap with a focus on the work of four modern theorists who have taken on the larger questions spawned by classical social theory. C. Wright Mills, Marvin Harris, Immanuel Wallerstein, and Gerhard Lenski have examined such phenomena and processes as the rise and impact of capitalism; the centralization and enlargement of authority; inequality; and the historical intensification of production and populations. Borrowing what is useful from the classics as well as relying on contemporary practitioners and empirical evidence, each theorist adds his own insights and interpretations in constructing a comprehensive perspective of sociocultural stability and change. This book fully synthesizes and documents each perspective, using language and examples that resonate with the general reader. A short biography on each theorist is also provided.

Classical social theory is alive!
By Mark Provost
Here is a work that covers four modern practioners of classical sociological analysis. Elwell explains his reasoning for analyzing the work of C. Wright Mills, Marvin Harris, Gerhard Lenski, and Immanuel Wallerstein, "By focusing on four recent practioners I hope to interest a new generation of sociology students in the excitement and rewards of holistic analyses."

Elwell laments the all too common practice of teaching sociological theory "as history". Instead, Elwell believes theory frames our understanding of history and society so that we can all better understand the 'world around us.' Elwell contributes to this undertaking by analyzing Mills, Lenski, Wallerstein, and Harris in a book that is accessible to both undergraduates and lay readers. Fortunately, Elwell's book is free from the sociological catch-phrases that characterize the work of myopic careerists and obscurantists.

Social theory is valuable to the extent that it helps render social processes visible and understandable. Each of the theorists covered borrowed heavily from the classical tradition of sociology (Marx, Weber, Durkheim, and Veblen) and each analyzed society as a system. The chapter on C. Wright Mills is the best summary of the mans work I know of and written with eminently readable prose-- documenting Mill's analyses of the Power Elites, Mass Society, rationalization, and the role of social science. Harris and Lenski both emphasize the impact of technology on production, work patterns, and inequality and contribute to the building of a research strategy of understanding past and contemporary societies alike.

Chapter 3 covers the work of the originator of world-systems analysis, Immanuel Wallerstein. Wallerstein is definitely one of the most original and controversial sociologists today. Wallerstein has dedicated his life to understanding what he calls `the capitalist world-system' and has pronounced that the world is currently experiencing the breakdown of the capitalist system. Elwell's book is indispensable reading for anyone interested in the rewarding task of understanding society through classical sociological analysis.

important sociology for undergrads and non-sociologists
By Davis D. Joyce
I'm a historian, not a sociologist, and to be honest, I have found the work of some sociologists to be incomprehensible, jargon-laden stuff. That is most assuredly not the case here. Frank W. Elwell writes well, in a manner that should be comprehensible (if not easy--but then macrosociological theory isn't easy) for undergraduates, and was very interesting indeed for me. The four theorists are Marvin Harris (cultural materialism), Immanuel Wallerstein ("World-Systems Analysis"), Gerhard Lenski ("Ecological-Evolutionary Theory"), and the perhaps best known, at least to the general reader, C. Wright Mills (bureaucracy, elites, and all that good stuff). I do historiography (the study of historians and their interpretations of history), and I find that introducing students to an individual historian works better than introducing them to a topic. So just one of the things I like about this book is that Elwell focuses on individual thinkers rather than broad themes (though the themes emerge). There are even little boxed-off sections on the life of each of the theorists. The back cover is correct in its assertion that Elwell uses "language and examples that resonate with the general reader." I strongly recommend this book.

Perception, Cognition, and Decision Training:The Quiet Eye in Act, by Joan Vickers

Athletes must be able to make split-second decisions under the pressures of competition, but often this vital learning is left to chance. With Perception, Cognition, and Decision Training: The Quiet Eye in Action, readers gain access to the research foundations behind an innovative decision-training system that has been used successfully for years in training athletes.

Certain to become the definitive guide to decision making in sport, this text presents three innovations solidly based in research. The first is the vision-in-action method of recording what athletes actually see when they perform. The second is the quiet eye phenomenon that has attracted considerable media attention. The third innovation is decision training to identify not only how athletes make performance decisions but also how to facilitate visual perception and action to enhance performance. Author Joan Vickers—who discovered the quiet eye and developed the vision-in-action method—takes the next step by integrating all three innovations into a system for helping athletes improve. Together, these advances provide scientific evidence of the effectiveness of perception–action coupling in athletes' training.

Perception, Cognition, and Decision Training: The Quiet Eye in Action is applied to a variety of sports and settings through a three-step decision-training model and seven ready-to-use tools for encouraging athletes to become part of the decision-training process. These tools are research-based concepts that coaches can choose from in order to help train athletes on a specific decision-making task in a simulated competition context. The book also uses these features:

-Informative chapter-opening items provide an overview of the content, and special sections recap the previous chapter and introduce the next.

-Screen captures from the latest in eye-tracking technology show what athletes actually see, where their eyes are directed, and how their gaze differs depending on their ability level.

-Boldfaced key terms and a thorough glossary make it easy to identify key concepts in this emerging field of study.

-Chapter-closing in-action sections provide an opportunity to visit Web sites, read articles, or complete tasks to discover how the concepts learned can be applied.

-Case studies show how coaches and athletes in various sports have successfully used gaze control and decision training.
The book is organized into three parts. Part I introduces the visuomotor system and two processing systems that work together to permit the great range of actions humans perform. Eye-tracking technology is reviewed along with new possibilities for measuring what athletes really see when they perform. In part II, the author presents a unique framework of gaze control. Readers will learn how skilled athletes control the gaze to gain optimal control of their attention and decision making. The quiet eye phenomenon, measurement, and training are also addressed.
Part III describes the three-step decision-training model and its application to how coaches design practice, provide feedback, use questions, and give instructions. Case studies show how others are using the model and the seven decision-training tools.

Decision training is designed to improve athletes' attention, anticipation, concentration, memory, and problem-solving skills, leading to extraordinary long-term gains. The cutting-edge research presented in this book allows readers to appreciate the growing importance of cognition, vision, and decision making; it also shows them how to apply this knowledge to sport training and coaching.

The winning edge.
By dynapro
I really appreciate the thought, effort and research that went into this book. I read articles on The Quiet Eye by Les Greevy and Ms. Vickers in the past. I thought that was "it" on the subject. I was very surprised to find this title, and much more surprised at how excellent it is. Every page is insightful and interesting. The scope of the book is broad and deep. As a competative shooter, I was plesantly surprised to find expansive discussions on real-life topics. I mean, where else have you ever seen the subject of competition "choking" analysed and interpreted. It's here! With much more... And I am so glad I discovered it. What is even more important, the book is readable. I feared I was buying a scientific text book. What I got was a brilliant personal conversation with a cutting edge scientist.

Vision, training, mental, performance. A total package. I will be studying it for years to come.

Thanks~ C.Costello in Colorado.

FIve star information buried in a text book. The science of sports vision is progressing quickly--even this information might be dated to an expert on the field but is eye opening to most sportsmen and shooters. Well worth the reading effort and time to improve visual competence in your game.

The Woman Who Thought too Much: A Memoir, by Joanne Limburg

For readers of A Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion and Bad Blood by Lorna Sage comes an intensely honest and surprisingly witty literary memoir of one woman's life as a sufferer of Obsessive-compulsive disorderJoanne Limburg is a woman who thinks things she doesn’t want to think, and who does things she doesn’t want to do. As a small child, she would chew her hair all day and lie awake at night wondering if heaven had a ceiling; a few years later, when she should have been doing her homework, she was pacing her bedroom, agonizing about the unfairness of life as a woman, and the shortness of her legs. By the time she was an adult, obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors had come to dominate her life. She knew that something was wrong with her, but it would take many years before she understood what that something was. This memoirfollows Limburg’s quest to understand herOCD and to manage her symptoms, takingthe reader on a journey through consulting rooms, libraries, and websites as she learns about rumination, scrupulosity, avoidance, thought-action fusion, fixed-action patterns, anal fixations, schemas, basal ganglia, tics, and synapses. Meanwhile, she does her best to come to terms with an illness that turns out to be common and even—sometimes—treatable. This vividly honest memoir is a sometimes shocking, often humorous revelation of what it is like to live with so debilitating a condition. It is also an exploration of the inner world of a poet and an intense evocation of the persistence and courage of the human spirit in the face of mental illness.

Review
"At times you want to close this book to protect its subject from your scrutiny. . . . She brings insight and a rueful wit to her story, which is interesting not only for her fellow walking wounded, but for writers and would-be writers." —Hilary Mantel, author, Wolf Hall

"Her prose . . . is disciplined, directional, and thankfully not without humor. . . . She presents a tale of self-acceptance, and that is something most of us could benefit from in an egocentric world that expects airbrushed perfection." —Jewish Chronicle

Great Book
By Anza Mehnert
THis book was interesting on a psychological level, but also riveting in terms of the story, and VERY funny. Joanne Limburg is honest, real and kind when she writes about her struggle with OCD, and shows what it can really be like for a person struggling with this disease. But she also talks about how to live despite the illness and reaching ones goals even with the effect of the illness. It does not have to ruke your life. Excellent read!!

Brilliant!

I really wanted to read a book about OCD, mostly due to the fact that many people don't even know what an OCD is. And I'm not disappointed.

The Woman Who Thought Too Much
By Damaskcat
Have you ever had a thought which kept going round and round in your head? Even if you know the thought or the idea is stupid you still can't get rid of it. There is no way you can reason with this idea and banish it so that you can get on with your life. All of us must at some time had the occasional idea or thought which won't be banished. But the author has lived with obsessional thoughts for the whole of her life and she has had professional help of various kinds over the years to try and deal with them.

The popular idea of OCD is of someone who constantly washes their hands or has to keep checking they've turned the oven off or locked the front door. This memoir may well help to dispel this idea. The author's main problem is obsessional patterns of thoughts. She sees excessive danger where most of us would see a normal everyday event. Crossing the road is only possible if there are no moving vehicles in sight from either direction. The author has visions of falling over and being squashed by a car when crossing the road.

Her fear of crossing roads intensified when she had a child of her own. She worries that she - or someone close to her - will be burned by a hot saucepan unless she ensures there is no possible danger. She thinks constantly about incredible sequences of events and wonders whether they will actually happen. She wouldn't ever carry her baby when walking on hard surfaces or down stairs in case she dropped him.

I found this memoir fascinating and horrifying in equal measure. If you do not have OCD or know anyone with the problem then this will open up a whole new world for you. Unfortunately you may recognise people in your own life who have some degree of OCD.
