Throughout, the author identifies two constants bearing directly on the question of who is entitled to relief and who can be excluded: the degree of embeddedness in any given community and the ability to work. Along this dual axis the author locates virtually the entire history of social welfare in early-modern and contemporary Europe.

This work is a systematic defense of the meaningfulness of the category of "the social," written in the tradition of Foucault, Durkheim, and Marx. Castel imaginatively builds on Durkheim's insight into the essentially social basis of work and welfare. Castel populates his sociological framework with vivid characterizations of the transient lives of the "disaffiliated": those colorful itinerants whose very existence proved such a threat to the social fabric of early-modern Europe. Not surprisingly, he discovers that the cruel and punitive measures often directed against these marginal figures are deeply implicated in the techniques and institutions of power and social control.

The author also treats the flipside of the problem of social assistance: namely, matters of work and wage-labor. Castel brilliantly reveals how the seemingly objective line of demarcation between able-bodied beggars—those who are capable of work but who chose not to do so—and those who are truly disabled becomes stretched in modernity to make room for the category of the "working poor." It is the novel crisis posed by those masses of population who are unable to maintain themselves by their labor alone that most deeply challenges modern societies and forges recognizably modern policies of social assistance.

The author's gloss on the social question also offers us valuable perspectives on contemporary debates over who should receive social assistance and whether this entitlement should be linked to the obligation to work. Castel's rich insights and brilliant generalizations are invaluable for anyone concerned with what he describes as the "new social question" of work and social welfare in contemporary society.

About the Author

Robert Castel is director of studies at the �cole des Hautes �tudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. His other books include Le Psychanalysme, l'Ordre Psychiatrique, and La Gestion des Risques. As an asexual and someone who shamelessly enjoys characters in love and characters in dangerous situations (like when, say, a murderer is after one of them) and especially characters who are in love in dangerous situations, I was SO excited to read this book, and I found myself incredibly let down. I'm going to start with the good, which was the dialogue between Malachi and Bran was hilarious. Malachi's wit had me laughing out loud at points, and his back and forth with Bran was natural and amusing. It was a cute book, but I found myself bored and not really wanting to finish the book after the killer was revealed.

The character relationships and family dynamics, while backstories were varied and given only in pieces that didn't make everything immediately known to the reader, were a bit cliched at times. As a reader I shouldn't be able to pick up on the fact that "Bran's head swam" or "Bran's head was swimming" was used often enough to me to say 'hey, this was used really recently... like, two pages ago.'

The sex scenes were excessive and unnecessary and didn't really serve to move the plot of the book forward in any way. It did show certain aspects of Bran and Malachi's developing relationship, but, again, it seemed... excessive. I stopped keeping track of how many there were after I think five.

There are asexuals who do things for the sake of their partners, yes, and there are asexuals who have sex simply for the stimulation and not because they are sexually attracted to anyone, but a conversation about Bran being willing to do things with Malachi despite his sexuality and the fact that he'd never really be interested would've suffied. Or even a singular sex scene showing that development and dynamic of their relationships rather than... however many pages of sex scenes I found myself skimming over, bored because - oh right, I have no desire to have sex. I certainly have no interest in reading about it. Again, it seemed excessive and didn't really seem to serve any sort of purpose for moving the plot of the book (you know, imminent danger, people trying to kill one of the boys) forward.

Other people may have really enjoyed the sex scenes, from what I skimmed they over they weren't terribly written, so if that's the kind of thing you're into, go for it. Overall, personally, I was just... really let down by this book. It was an amusing, quick read, but I won't be downloading the sequel.

I'm so glad I did

Oh my, I just finished reading and I am still smiling. The blurb intrigued me and I thought why not, take a chance. I'm so glad I did. Bran is shy, sweet and asexual. Malachi is short, outgoing and sweet on Bran. They were so cute together and accepting of each other. I loved how Bran grew stronger in who he was and what he wanted, which was Mal. I had never read a story where someone was asexual. I knew the term but not what it meant. This was an adorable story that showed me a little bit about what it's like. Thank you to Michaela Grey for putting this story out there!

Lovely representation of asexuality

When I started the first chapter of this book, I thought I knew exactly where it was going- the characters acted as exposition pieces that gave a lot of information in a short amount of time. However, as you get into the story and get to know the characters, they begin to flesh out, and the exposition dies down so that you can sit back and enjoy the tale.

You start with the likable Bran, an asexual who loves to bake and attends university, and Malachi, another university student who seems to have whatever he wants. The two meet properly, and the love story goes in a pleasantly different direction from what I expected.

This story avoids the tropes of jealousy, of lack of communication, and others that normally make you roll your eyes in romance stories. The characters do fight, yes, but they have reason to, and the communication between those who care about each other was refreshing. The sex scenes are there, but they are brief and easy to skip if you feel the urge to do so. They weren't overly explicit, which was something I appreciated.

I won't go into too much more detail, but this is a nice representation of an asexual character without having their aceness shoved into your face. That said, this is representation of a romantic asexual, so I hope in future works we'll see other variations of aces. I'm hopeful, as the author presented other sexualities in the same casual, matter-of-fact manner that I liked about Bran's orientation.

Dave Conrey is an artist, designer, entrepreneur, and family man. When not spending time with his son, playing dinosaurs or superheroes, he is working on a number of creative projects, ranting on his podcast (The Fresh Rag Show), or writing his next book. Before launching his own brand, he worked for 2 decades as a graphic designer and art director, and he uses this experience to inform, engage, and advise creative entrepreneurs on how to take their work from a hobby to a viable business.

Take the first step to selling your art online

First of all, I like books that are well organized and get to the point, and Selling Art Online is one of those books.

Basically, depending on the type of art you create, there are different websites to sell your art from that have very different clientele. Obviously, the hard part is to find the right site to sell your art that will reach the right person who will like your art enough to buy it. The author helps you assess your website choices and motivates you to pick one and try it out. In fact, this book is like speed dating with 20 websites.

Seriously, if this book doesn't give you the kick in the proverbial pants to post your art online, nothing will. The author genuinely wants you to get your art on the Internet and he feels it is his job to talk you into it by the end of the book. And again, to push you over the edge, he gives you 20 sites to choose from, which are grouped into five categories, and the pros and cons of each site--no excuses! If you're a control freak, there are sites for you. If you're more hands-off, then let these other sites do the work for you.

By the way, he says if you don't think you're ready to put yourself out there or your art piece isn't perfect, you're wrong. Get your art on the Internet and don't be afraid to fail because nobody will care. Don't let fear paralyze you. And if you do fail, then maybe the site you picked wasn't the right fit and just try again with another site in the same or different category. As Tennyson once said, "'Tis better to have posted your art online and failed, then to have never posted at all." (That quote wasn't in the book.)

The author also shares some of his tricks, like the "3T" method of posting, to promote your art-for-sale on social media websites. He even offers some ideas on how to create lots of interesting content for your online followers or blog readers.

Good, but more for designers than artists

I found that the book had many tips for selling online but was geared towards designers more so than artists. If I were a designer or if the book was titled Selling Design.. or Art and Design online, the title may have told me more accurately what the book was about.
It did open my mind up as to different online selling options. The most useful thing for me as an artist a bit paranoid about "selling out" was that it is actually ok, smart and kind to people to create a variety of options for someone to collect my work, I.e. Original painting, short run books, posters, prints etc. as not everyone can afford an original. To create accessibility is good for everyone.
I would like to see more nuts and bolts coaching on how to create artists profiles on social media, and also many more actual strategies for attracting clients from various sources all the way to making a purchase and repeat business.
The book is a great idea and I recommend consulting fine artists regarding ideas for future editions. At the moment it seems more like a helpful blog than a how to book.

Surprisingly powerful book even for an Online Veteran

I'm not a newbie to online art selling, I built the first iteration of my creative art business on the backs of Etsy and Big Cartel almost 5 years ago. Like Dave, I have a background in branding and graphic design and I'm well versed with internet marketing and the online business world. I have tremendous respect for Dave and what he is trying to do for his fellow creatives but I never thought I needed the book. I've read so many art selling books and since I'm so entrenched in it myself, what else can Dave tell me that I didn't already know?

Surprise surprise!! Dave has taken everything he knows (and continues to find out through his Fresh Rag podcasts, interviews and creative connections) and put it into this small but incredibly powerful little book about navigating selling art online today. It's not something you can't find out yourself but nothing beats investing the blood, sweat and tears into it yourself as an artist, making all the mistakes and then articulating it in a way that's easy to digest so that others can learn from your experience.

My favorite part of the book is how he groups the various sites/platforms into categories so that it's easier to compare features. This is not just a list of what the platforms do but also invaluable analysis and thoughts from someone who has investigated them for himself. Dave tries to update it too as times change but he will tell you that it's hard to keep up so he has made himself reasonably accessible for questions so you can always email him or reach him via social media!

The final section of the book offers strategies for controlling and minimising the misuses of tests by introducing the notion of Critical Language Testing which calls for the examination of the consequences and misuses of tests, monitoring of power and pointing to their unethical uses. This is a great book on critical language testing. In this era of NCLB, we should think more carefully as to how tests can be used as disciplinary tools and/or tools to manufacture and control certain behaviors. We all need to think more critically about how the results of tests are used in this current era of high-stakes accountability.

Weaponized Baseball is a fun and educational trip through history. You don't have to be a baseball fanatic to enjoy learning about hidden facts throughout history affected by baseball. Also, if you enjoy puzzles Scott Rowan uses Morse Code in each chapter title and includes fun coded messages in the index. See if you can decode like a pro.This is a well written and well researched book. A fun read!

This book is full of things I didn’t learn in history class. Parsley Massacre? Scott Rowan’s integration of history and baseball made this a really enjoyable read, even for someone who is not a sports fan. The pictures throughout the book also helped bring the stories to life. After finishing the book, I walked around asking people “Did you know…….?” I couldn’t help myself. A must read!
