This volume is an introductory level textbook for partial differential equations (Pde's) and suitable for a one-semester undergraduate level or two-semester graduate level course in Pde's or applied mathematics. Chapters One to Five are organized according to the equations and the basic Pde's are introduced in an easy to understand manner. They include the first-order equations and the three fundamental second-order equations, i.e. the heat, wave and Laplace equations. Through these equations we learn the types of problems, how we pose the problems, and the methods of solutions such as the separation of variables and the method of characteristics. The modeling aspects are explained as well. The methods introduced in earlier chapters are developed further in Chapters Six to Twelve. They include the Fourier series, the Fourier and the Laplace transforms, and the Green's functions. The equations in higher dimensions are also discussed in detail. This volume is application-oriented and rich in examples. Going through these examples, the reader is able to easily grasp the basics of Pde's.

About the Author
Dr. Spencer Nadolsky is a board certified Family Medicine Physician and a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. His love for lifestyle as medicine began in athletics where he worked hard using exercise and nutrition science to propel himself in football and wrestling. After wrestling at UNC Chapel Hill as the Tar Heel heavyweight and earning a degree in exercise science, he headed to Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg. During medical school, Dr. Nadolsky attended multiple obesity medicine conferences and realized that he wanted to use the same nutrition and exercise information he learned for athletics but now for the general population and health. After medical school, he attended VCU’s Riverside Family Medicine Residency in Newport News to hone his skills. He is currently practicing in Olney, Maryland.

They're very smart, but think they know more than they actually ...
By Alan Aragon
As a group, doctors have huge egos. They're very smart, but think they know more than they actually do - especially when it comes to weight loss & fitness. In contrast, a scant minority of doctors put their egos aside, stay on top of the research, and really walk the walk. Dr. Spencer Nadolsky is one of those rare stallions. I just finished his book, and highly recommend it. It's an easy read, very straight-forward, and is particularly strong in the practical applications as well as the influence of medications on weight loss. I can't always claim to have learned anything new from diet books, but in this case I did. A job well-done, Spencer!

No fluff, just facts on fat loss
By Jonathan Goodman
In full disclosure, Dr. Nadolsky sent me a review copy of the book before it came out.

The book delivers, plain and simple. It's not the type of book that's going to promise you "5 new ways to lose fat" or whatever. It's going to teach you what methods are scientifically proven and let you decide.

While there are workouts and nutrition guides to follow, the most important thing that you'll get from this book is the empowerment to know what is proven and what isn't so that you can make your own decision.

Great Book for the Layperson Looking to Lose Fat
By Hyok Lee
OK, first of all, I think it is very difficult to write a fat loss/weight loss book. The book has to be geared towards the intended audience. Otherwise, it will either be too complicated and difficult to understand, or too simple and basic. This book is geared towards people who are confused by all the contradictory information out there on how to lose fat. The intent of the book is not for advanced trainers looking to get six-pack abs, but for those who want to lose a few pounds and improve their health, but don't know how.

I did not buy this book for myself. I count macros and calories, and I have pretty good control over my weight. I bought it so that I can help my mom. She has been overweight or obese most of her adult life. As anyone who has tried to help a loved one improve their eating habits, it is very hard! I needed to help her change just a couple of eating habits that will get her the most result for the least amount of effort. There is no way that she is going to keep a food log and count calories.

I was hoping that I could learn a few things from Dr. Nadolsky's extensive experience dealing with people like my mom. This book delivers just that. It puts fat loss into very simple and understandable terms. One of the most important things the book does is drive home the point that you must consume fewer calories that you expend, in order to lose fat. All the diets out there that promise you that you can eat to your hearts content, as long as you avoid such and such food, gloss over this point.

Each of the nine steps are grounded in solid research and/or his experience in his practice. For example, research has shown over and over that eating sufficient protein is important for satiety and adherence to a diet. There are also personal vignettes throughout the book that tell of specific patients who were struggling with fat loss and the strategies they used to overcome the obstacles. It gives the reader the sense, "If he/she could lose 40 lbs, maybe so can I."

There is also a very extensive section on drugs that can influence fat loss. As folks get older, they get put on more and more medications. It is important to know how each affects weight and appetite. This is the first book that I've come across that gives the topic such a detailed overview.

I highly recommend this book for the simple, practical, actionable advice it offers. By making room for one's favorite foods, the plan ensures good adherence. Multiple studies have shown that the most diets work, as long as one can stick to them. This book lays out a plan that is easy to follow and stick to.

I will be visiting my mom in a few days, and I will try a few of the steps with her. English is not her first language, so I cannot just hand her the book. I will need to explain to her what to do and why. Hopefully, she will get some good results. I will post an update, later.

GNAT User's Guide - GNAT The GNU Ada Compiler: Manual For Gcc Version 4.3.3, by Ada Core

This guide describes the use of GNAT, a compiler and software development toolset for the full Ada programming language. It documents the features of the compiler and tools, and explains how to use them to build Ada applications. GNAT implements Ada 95 and Ada 2005, and it may also be invoked in Ada 83 compatibility mode. By default, GNAT assumes Ada 2005, but you can override with a compiler switch (see Section 3.2.9 [Compiling Different Versions of Ada], page 66) to explicitly specify the language version. Throughout this manual, references to "Ada" without a year suffix apply to both the Ada 95 and Ada 2005 versions of the language. *** Money raised from the sale of this book supports the development of free software and documentation.

Not just another crime story
By angelpride
One of the previous reviewers, using the name `Unforgiven', is in fact none other than the informant in the Darius Guppy story, a Peter Risdon.

This can be seen at [...] This is important because I think there is a different angle to this book, which I enjoyed very much, than other reviewers have pointed out. So while the whole Darius Guppy trial in the UK was a sensation because of the Royal connections, a jewellery robbery in a New York hotel, an act of vengeance against Lloyds of London (a large UK insurance company who had bankrupted Guppy's father along with many other `names'), keeping one step ahead of the law and all the other ingredients of a Hollywood movie, in fact underneath all of that is a another tale, the tale of a man, (the informant), who became obsessed with the other members of the team, in particular Darius Guppy, and how he was driven to betray his accomplices, not just to save his own skin from the cops but also by a bitter jealousy towards people who represented everything he wanted to be in life. It's also interesting how far the authorities were prepared to go to protect their informant in order to nail the rest of the team.

I won't spoil the plot for other readers but this is a really fascinating tale, not just because of its glamour factor but also because it deals with the old themes of envy and betrayal.

I recommend it as a great read and also recommend viewers to visit the website above because it contains a lot of useful material and evidence about how Darius Guppy and his partners were eventually caught, one year after pulling off their sting.

Great story
By A Customer
Although this book is let down by poor editing, the story itself is something of a classic. In many parts hilariously recounted, Roll the Dice tells how a brilliant young man who seemingly had it all staged an armed robbery of precious gems in a New York hotel and manged to convince Lloyds of London to pay out some 2M in insurance moneys. The fact that Lloyds had, in the eyes of the author, been responsible for his father's loss of an equivalent sum, was sweet revenge to him. Although some would see this as a convenient explanation, to be fair to Guppy, he makes clear that this was only part of his motivation, with sheer bravado and boredom with the gilded society in which he mixed playing at least as important a role. Two years after his sting against the world's largest insurers, however, he was betrayed by a supergrass who had struck a deal with police officers in return for leniency for his own criminal endeavours and Guppy found himself in Brixton jail. For me the most fascinationg aspect of the story is the insight given into the author's character. As a result of his exploits, Guppy became for a number of years a favourite subject matter for the British media - hardly surprising since his story could have come straight out of a Hollywood blockbuster - but his portrayal at their hands was at best two dimensional and, more often than not, plain libellous. One cannot help feeling that many of the criticisms levelled agaisnt him were prompted by envy and a sense of schadenfreude. The reader detects an interesting mix of anarchism and puritanism in the author, together with a profound dissatisfaction with the privileged and vacuous sloane ranger set with which he came into contact as a result of his upbringing. It is quite clear, for example, that he feels more at home with the armed robbers and assorted villains he meets in prison, and whom he describes as more interesting, more honourable and, paradoxically, more honest than the cocktail party set he found so dull. Interesting too is his friendship with Earl Spencer, brother of the Princess of Wales, with whom he bonds despite his background and not because of it, and also his love affair with a working class girl from the North of England whom he marries and with whom he has a child. Although a number of reviewers have labelled Guppy "arrogant" as a rsult of his actions, this seems a faulty description. Far from being arrogant, Guppy comes across as an intelligent and able young man with a sense of humour who feels empathy with those less fortunate than himself, such as his fellow inmates in jail, and as someone who has a deep sense of loyalty towards his family and friends. One suspects that it is his hatred of the media and his contempt for the upper echelons of English society and of the establishment whom he regards as hypocritical and immoral that have, in fact, earned him the label "arrogant." Rather, Guppy is a character with which any buccaneer from Elizabethan times or any 19th Century Anarchist would have identified. The world would surely be a duller place without such people.

I had almost forgotten the Darius Guppy story until a friend of mine reminded me about it recently. So I decided to read Roll the Dice. Like a previous reviewer I thought that the editing left a lot to be desired but this may be the result of the two voices that can be detected in the book. The first voice comes across as the co-writer's or editor's where the style is more journalistic and racy. The second voice seems to be the author's itself, where the style is much more literate and reflective. It is this tension between what the co-author wants him to say and what the man himself wants to write that may account for the rather disjointed writing style and it is here that decent editing would have made a difference. A pity.

Having said this, I found the story immensely entertaining and interesting. Darius does not come across as remotely arrogant but as thoughtful and passionate and driven by conflicting forces.

In fact 'Elizebethan' is a word that springs to mind in considering his adventures - cunning, bold, foolhardy, noble, brave, foolhardy and no doubt sheer mad.

Although in the end he went to prison owing not so much to clever detective work as to the evidence of a police informer one senses that the final victory is his. All the forces of the police, Lloyds of London, the courts and the British media were unable to break him. He seems at the very least a fascinating man.

Well worth the read and it seems amazing that they haven't made a film of this book yet, especially when we consider how much the man packed in while he was still in his early twenties. Wonder what he's up to now.

Why Study Theology? Insights from author Alister E. McGrath
Author Alister E. McGrath

There are a number of reasons why it’s both important and enriching to study theology and here I have listed what I think are three of the most important. Firstly, studying theology is about making sense of some of the great debates and themes of history. It is impossible to study the religious art of the Middle Ages, the great literature of the Renaissance, the history of the sixteenth century, or the novels of J. R. R. Tolkien without knowing something about theology. To study theology is to pass through a gateway which offers an enhanced vision of human thought and history. It’s like a lens that helps bring things into focus. Secondly, theology enables us to see things through the eyes of others, so that we can gain fresh perspectives on some of the great questions of faith. One of the leading themes of C. S. Lewis’s late work An Experiment in Criticism (1961) is that reading literature enables us to see with the eyes of others, deepening and sometimes challenging our own ideas. To read Augustine, Athanasius, Thomas Aquinas or Karl Barth is to have our eyes opened to other ways of seeing things. We may not agree with them, but their insights help us forge and enrich our own approaches. Thirdly, studying theology brings new depth and vitality to faith. When the novelist Evelyn Waugh discovered Christianity in 1930, he spoke of beginning the “delicious process of exploring it limitlessly.” Theology is about mapping the landscape of faith, discovering its landmarks, appreciating its inner logic, and experiencing its beauty and richness.

Review
"This is an excellent and extremely helpful introduction to Christian theology. Believers of all familiarity with theology will find McGrath's explanations helpful and clarifying. This would be an excellent text for a sunday school or church bible study. I would even include this as a text for an introductory course in theology." (Jacob Sweeney's Blog, 16 December 2011)

"McGrath’s approach is creedal and biblical. The chapters are lucid, engaging, and thought-provoking in so far as they serve as gateways into a complex (if not at times convoluted) field of study.” (Religious Studies Review)

“The publisher's blurb reports that the first edition was 'an international best seller' …It deserves this success. Students need such a clearly presented, sure-footed account of the theological basics.” (Theological Book Review)

Review
"What makes this book such an effective introduction to the essential ingredients of the Christian faith is the way in which Alister McGrath interweaves leading theological ideas with the views of major theologians. The result is a compact but thorough volume that is sound, useful, and remarkably appealing. Highly recommended as a basic text for both beginning and intermediate classes in Christian theology."
—David Hein, Hood College Maryland

"McGrath has successfully created a theology which is both inviting to the beginning student and informing to the more advanced student. His approach often offers a unique perspective on how to warmly introduce a student to complex discussions on theology. This book will be useful on many levels in the church and the academy as an introductory theology."
—David Talley, Talbot School of Theology, Biola University

"At one point, Professor McGrath aptly describes this book as a handshake of welcome for those who want to begin the study of Christian theology. Written in a style that is friendly, clear and accessible, it inducts the novice into a masterly overview of the subject and into the lively, questioning conversation that it represents."
—Jeremy Worthen, South East Institute for Theological Education and University of Kent

"This book is ecumenical in the best sense of that word. McGrath appeals to the breadth and depth of the Church's witness in order to explain its faith, and in so doing he has produced a superb guidebook for the study of theology. The book should engage students of all stripes. It raises as many questions as it answers, and it provides the foundation for a deeper exploration of the Church's common mind."
—Mark Weedman, Crossroads College

"Theology: The Basics offers a masterful simplification of the central themes, complex history, and creative giants of Christian thought. McGrath provides a scholarly introduction to the discipline of Christian Theology that avoids partisanship without sacrificing profundity."
—Lonnie D. Kliever, Southern Methodist University

Excellent overview of Christian Theology
By mercedes
The book is exactly what the title implies, the basics. A very good summary of Christian theology without too much depth. I am sure, from his comments that his other book goes into more detail with explanations.

Every Man A Theologian? Absolutely!
By Thomas J. Burns
Possibly the greatest treasure of the Catholic Church is its two millennia of reflection and study of Revelation and the Mystery of God, namely theology, the "sacred science." Theology is little known to lay Catholics in typical parish life, as it may be confused with elementary instruction or religious education. Catechetics and most faith formation programs pose definitive and conversation-ending answers to those who have yet to ask the piercing questions. Theology, by contrast, begins with philosophy and seeks the mind and wisdom of God, in disciplined and systematic ways, in order to address the hungers of the human heart. Theology and its laborers know that this science can never balance its books, for its object (and passion, really) is the mind and soul of God. From Apostolic times the Church has thrived on the organized thinking and writings of its gifted theologians, beginning with Paul and the Evangelists, and continuing down to our time in the works of Augustine, Aquinas and Rahner.

Inevitably the question arises as to the provenance of the sacred science. Is it a project of seminarians and clerics, or is the privilege of exploring the sacred Tradition of the very essence of Baptismal right and responsibility? I would argue the latter, in that we cannot love a God we do not know nor can we celebrate that love without the passion or thrill that mystery arouses. A clarity achieved with no effort is a loveless marriage.

Alister McGrath's work is both an invitation and a roadmap. He introduces the layman and the cleric to the questions posed by a divinely created universe and the time tested formulas of belief around which Catholic thought has organized itself since the Nicene Creed was promulgated in the fourth century. His 32-page preface is an excellent and informative overview of the project of theology, highlighting the various methods of approaching this discipline while introducing its past and present masters. He discusses briefly but clearly the role of philosophy in both the development and intelligibility of theology.

Citing the acclamations of the Nicene Creed, McGrath unpacks the universal mysteries they address. "I believe in one God" becomes an essay on faith, the recognition of things unseen, most notably a Supreme Being. He examines St. Thomas Aquinas's "proofs" of the existence of God, derived at least in part from the philosopher Aristotle's recognition of a first cause and later called into question in the generation of Charles Darwin.

Each postulate of the Faith, however, opens new doors of questioning. One may believe in God, but as chapter two reflects, just whose God are we to believe? Further, what are the possibilities of apprehending this God? The Roman Emperor Hadrian's request of a Jewish rabbi to behold his God (p. 23) is a pithy summary of a complex question and would inspire theologians to our own day to explore the possibilities and capacities of humans to engage the divine. Karl Rahner's twentieth century speculation on the "supernatural existential" is a child of Hadrian's question.

Trinitarian formulation (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) has always implied multiple interventions of the Divine. McGrath examines these in detail, beginning with creation in Chapter 3. The author explores a variety of metaphors including the Genesis accounts, Plato's concept of the divine as extrinsic fashioner, and the early Christian heresy of Gnosticism. In this chapter the work of an early Christian theologian comes into focus, namely the anti-Gnostic Justin Martyr (c. 150), and the reader gets a good look into the workshop of Revelation, Faith and lived experience, in this case frontal assault, where all theologians live, move, and have their being, so to speak.

As one might expect, the subject of Jesus is comprehensively addressed. McGrath approaches Christology from several flanks--the titles applied to Jesus, who applied them, and what they meant; the function of Jesus, specifically soteriology or the meaning of salvation; and finally, the Church's efforts to linguistically and logically talk of the meaning of Jesus Christ, in the "Christological Councils" of 325-451 AD.

Discussion of the Holy Spirit is complex. Understanding and misunderstanding of the role of the Spirit has essentially divided Christianity East and West, and even in relatively mundane matters as the age of Christian Confirmation of minors, clarity regarding the work of the Spirit remains a major focal point of theological investigation. McGrath does not shy away from these historical difficulties, which through time have led to debate and controversy over the nature of a threefold God or Trinity.

It is probably evident at this point that McGrath has, in his 200+ pages, set the table of the full banquet of theology. The study of the Trinity has led to investigation of those who believe in it, the Church, [ecclesiology] and its canon or collection of revealed works [Jewish and Christian scripture study], its communal life and behaviors [morality], its worship [liturgy], traditions [history], etc.

While it is true that theologians--dating back to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John--have been indispensible in maintaining the backbone of faith and continuity in the global Church of all times, it is equally true that the object of theological study radically impresses itself upon the character and identity of those who embrace its labors. McGrath and other theologians use the phrase "obedience to the text" as a way of describing the irrepressible wave of change, perhaps best called grace, experienced by those in proximity to the wisdom of God.

The study of theology demands guidance, organization, humility, and grit. That said, the study of theology by all believers is the democratization of grace, the freedom of all people of good will to be dazzled by divine wisdom and passionately in love with Lady Wisdom, who delighted the Lord "from the beginning."

A great beginning
By James Kelliher
Having started formation for Holy Orders, I chose this book to begin to have a better knowledge of theological teachings. I was not disappointed and seek to read more from this author. His style and approach, in this book, allow the novice to slowly grasp concepts that will be expanded on in further works.

Horrible OS book. Do not buy under any circumstances.
By Stephen C. Mattison
This is an absolutely horrible book. The book's teaching strategy is centered around many verbose OS simulation outputs. I would gather that ~50% of the books text is output from the CD's simulation package. I must also mention that the simulation package itself is exceedingly buggy and inaccurate.

I can not stress enough how bad this book is. If an instructor ever "requires" this book, DO NOT BUY IT. Buy a different operating system book, seriously.

I am a student of the author, and a skilled developer. Here's the skinny.
By Sage Gerard
I am an application developer of eight years with enough systems programming experience to be useful in a assistant sysadmin gig. I started early but enrolled in an undergrad program to pass the "no degree, no job" barrier keeping me in dead-end independent contract work.

Dr. Jose Garrido, one of the authors, is currently my professor for an OS course (Spring 2014) at Kennesaw State University. I had him for one other course before, so I am familiar with his pedagogy. Don't get me wrong from the 3-star rating, Dr. Garrido is a great guy that is easy to get along with, and I enjoy having him as a professor. There are reasons I enrolled in his classes more than once, so please note I am judging this book and this book alone by it's merit and usefulness to those looking for a good introduction and reference to operating systems.

Okay, I lied. I do have one comment on Garrido: English is not Garrido's first language. The resulting text is certainly readable with help from his editors, but the text has an almost robotic flow due to the simplistic sentence structure. Although this paragraph does not appear in the book, it illustrates Garrido's writing style: "This is a computer. It is used for various applications. A computer can have an operating system. There are many types of operating systems. It used to be that there were no operating systems at all."

One of the big reasons I docked the rating was the fact a good chunk of the book is basically an ad for Garrido's Java simulation library PsimJ3. I worked with PSimJ3 for a project, and the simulation models were poorly designed. We're talking a singleton class with nothing but static methods and fields managing a multithreaded application using other classes with copied/pasted code. This is by no means a stable platform on which to write course material.

PSimJ and robotic prose aside, the text has bizarrely-shaped state graphs that obscure rather than clarify, and a focus on simulation models and benchmarking techniques that is so strong that it comes in contention with the title of the book.

This is not to say you wouldn't learn something from the book. I would recommend this text if you wanted to get a taste of simulation models and a fundamental look at how performance metrics relate to an understanding of various operating system types. The only real drawback is that you may find yourself refactoring or even debugging provided code.

But to be brutally honest with you, you would learn much more from a conversation with Dr. Garrido than from his work (there are several publicly accessible papers and resources of his through Kennesaw State University's Computer Science department's website: cs.kennesaw.edu

Decent book
By Walter L. Williams
Required for a class. The principles are decently presented and I learned quite a bit from this book.

As with most college classes everything is rush - rush, so the simulations are WAY over the top and a waste of time as they are something that need to be picked through to understand.

OH! The index is completely worthless. Don't bother flipping to back of the book to look something up.

An explosive expos of America’s lost prosperity—from Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Charlie LeDuff

Back in his broken hometown, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Charlie LeDuff searches the ruins of Detroit for clues to his family’s troubled past. Having led us on the way up, Detroit now seems to be leading us on the way down. Once the richest city in America, Detroit is now the nation’s poorest. Once the vanguard of America’s machine age—mass-production, blue-collar jobs, and automobiles—Detroit is now America’s capital for unemployment, illiteracy, dropouts, and foreclosures. With the steel-eyed reportage that has become his trademark, and the righteous indignation only a native son possesses, LeDuff sets out to uncover what destroyed his city. He beats on the doors of union bosses and homeless squatters, powerful businessmen and struggling homeowners and the ordinary people holding the city together by sheer determination. Detroit: An American Autopsy is an unbelievable story of a hard town in a rough time filled with some of the strangest and strongest people our country has to offer.

From Booklist
After a career as a Pulitzer Prize–winning reporter with the New York Times, LeDuff answered the longing to return to his roots in Detroit, a city that was once at the forefront of American industry and growth. What he returned to was a city now more famous for its corruption and decay. LeDuff reprises the shenanigans of Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and city councilwoman Monica Conyers and others before the slow-moving justice process caught up with them. Among the other signs of decay: a police department so broke that cops take the bus to crime scenes and a fire department so bereft it sells its brass poles as scrap. He reports on surreptitious meetings with police officers to counter rosy reports of declining crime rates. He also reports on the personal toll the city’s decline has taken on its citizens, including his own family, with grim stories of his brothers’ chronic unemployment and his sister’s and niece’s deaths from drug overdoses. With the emotions of personal connection and the clear-eyed detachment of a reporter, LeDuff examines what Detroit’s decline means for other American cities. --Vanessa Bush

Review
"LeDuff returns, by the books end, to the bar where his sister was last seen, only to find it unrecognizable. A black man outside explains the changes. 'they trying to put something nice up' in this hellhole he says, speaking of the bar specifically, though his words spread across the city and pay tribute, in equal measure, to its dreamers, its pessimists and to those, resigned and wrung out, who love it despite all. 'Can't say it's working. But what you gonna do? You ain’t gonna be reincarnated, so you got to do the best you can with the moment you got. Do the best you can and try to be good.' LeDuff has done his best, and his book is better than good."
—Paul Clemens, New York Times Book Review

"One cannot read Mr. LeDuff's amalgam of memoir and reportage and not be shaken by the cold eye he casts on hard truths... A little gonzo, a little gumshoe, some gawker, some good-Samaritan—it is hard to ignore reporting like Mr. LeDuff's."
—The Wall Street Journal

“Pultizer-Prize-winning journalist LeDuff (Work and Other Sins) delivers an edgy portrait of the decline, destruction, and possible redemption of his hometown…LeDuff writes with honesty and compassion about a city that’s destroying itself–and breaking his heart.”
—Publishers Weekly, STARRED REVIEW

“A book full of both literary grace and hard-won world-weariness…. Iggy Pop meets Jim Carroll and Charles Bukowski”
—Kirkus

“This is our pick for a sleeper nonfiction hit next year. Charlie LeDuff is a remarkable journalist, and this book is filled with incredible writing as he witnesses his home city crumble through neglect and corruption.”
—Huffington Post

“What to do when you’re a reporter and your native city is rotting away? If you’re LeDuff, you leave The New York Times and head into the wreckage to ride with firemen, hang with the corrupt pols, and retrace your own family’s sad steps through drugs. Others have written well about the city, but none with the visceral anger, the hair-tearing frustration, and the hungry humanity of LeDuff.”
—Newsweek

Advance Praise for Detroit:

"You wouldn't think a book about the stinking decay of the American dream could be this engaging, this irreverent, this laugh-at-loud funny. But not everyone can write like Charlie LeDuff. I'm tempted to say he's the writer for our desperate times the way Steinbeck and Orwell were for other people's desperate times, except he's such an original he's like no one but himself."
—Alexandra Fuller, author of Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness and Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight

"Charlie LeDuff is a drunkard, a blowhard, a Fox News Reporter -- and a brilliant writer. Detroit is full of righteous anger and heartbreaking details. It's also funny as hell. Hunter S. Thompson would've loved every page of this book."
—Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation and Reefer Madness

"In Detroit: An American Autopsy, Charlie LeDuff brings alive the reality of our beloved city. The city where I was shot at eight times during my twenty six year police career. Yet, Detroit has survived in spite of corruption, political ineptness, poor education, and decades of unemployment. Detroit: An American Autopsy is a must read for all of America."
—Detroit Police Chief Ike McKinnon (retired); Associate Professor of Education, University of Detroit Mercy

Down and dirty account of the decline and fall of the Motor City.
By Paul Tognetti
"Studying the city through the windshield now, it wasn't frightening anymore. It was empty and forlorn and pathetic. On some blocks not a single home was occupied, the structures having fallen victim to desertion and the arsonist's match. I drove blocks without seeing a living soul." -- p. 71

It was not quite the homecoming that Charlie LeDuff had hoped for. LeDuff had won a Pulitzer Prize during an 11year stint as a staff reporter for the New York Times. In 2007 he abruptly quit his gig as a member of the Times Los Angeles bureau after he decided that he was tired of L.A. and that his wife and three year old daughter really needed to be around family. Charlie LeDuff's clan resided in and around the city of Detroit. Much to his surprise when he contacted the lowly, virtually bankrupt Detroit News about a position he found that one was available. The die was now cast. His bosses at The News had already figured out the best way to utilize their talented new reporter. They told him to "chronicle the decline of the Great Industrial American City." This was going to be right up his alley. Charlie LeDuff liked to get his fingernails dirty. He knew things were pretty bad in his hometown but until he actually arrived there he had no idea just how ugly it had gotten. "Detroit: An American Autopsy" is the rough and tumble story of a city in total free fall. Perhaps what is most frightening about what you will read in this book is that what has happened in Detroit could well be repeated in a number of other major urban areas around this nation.

So just who is to blame for the demise of this once great American city? Depending on your politics just about everyone has a theory. Liberals point their finger at the greedy executives of the auto industry and Wall Street who shifted hundreds of thousands of jobs away from the Motor City to places like Mexico. Conservatives on the other hand would tend to blame ill-advised trade legislation like NAFTA and the corrupt Democratic political machine that has run this city for decades for many of the problems. But when Charlie LeDuff started to crunch some numbers what he found was simply astounding. To fully understand just how far Detroit has fallen you need to know that in its heyday in the 1960's the city boasted a total population of 1.9 million. By the early 1990's that number had fallen to 1.2 million. Now in 2013 the population of Detroit has dwindled to fewer than 700,000 people! Meanwhile, there are in the neighborhood of 62,000 vacant houses in Detroit. It seems all that left is a destitute underclass and an extremely corrupt bureaucracy. City services such as police and fire and public works are a joke. The equipment these public servants are forced to use is antiquated and extremely unreliable. Staffing has been cut to the bone. Another barometer of just how bad things have gotten in Detroit is the number of dead bodies piling up at the morgue. LeDuff reports that on any given day there are around 250 unclaimed bodies. One has sat there for more than two years!

Throughout the pages of "Detroit: An American Autopsy" Charlie LeDuff shines the spotlight on all of ills of this once proud metropolis including unemployment, illiteracy, foreclosure, arson, murder and widespread bureaucratic corruption. It is all too much for those who remain. This is a dangerous place to be. Along the way LeDuff investigates the corrupt city administration, looks into the death of a beloved veteran firefighter killed during an arson and chronicles the most bizarre real life murder story you will likely ever hear. And yet, despite it all the author points out that there are still many good people here who are doing their best to stop the bleeding. You will meet a number of them in this book who despite the odds consistently go above and beyond the call of duty in a largely vain attempt to save the city they love.

"Detroit: An American Autopsy" is a riveting expose of the decline and fall of a once great American city. Recently, Forbes magazine pointed to Detroit as "the most miserable city in America". After reading this book it is easy to see why! I had heard stories but had no idea that things were this bad. Some would argue that it is probably too late to save Detroit but Charlie LeDuff would beg to differ. In spite of all the problems he encountered during the two years of reporting it took to cobble together this book he still sees a glimmer of hope out there. This really is a story that needed to be told. Other American cities would do well to learn from the myriad mistakes made here lest they suffer the same fate. "Detroit: An American Autopsy" would be a great choice for anyone interested in the future of major American cities and for general readers as well. The language gets a bit colorful from time to time but as I pointed out earlier Charlie LeDuff likes to get his fingernails dirty. Highly recommended!

Grim, unrelenting, blunt and harsh - but not exploitative
By Nathan Webster
A lot's been said about "Decay Porn," where reporters/writers/photographers from out of the city sort of parachute into Detroit and then pontificate about whatever they've observed. It's not that their observations are invalid, but they obviously lack a personal perspective.

Charlie LeDuff, a native Detroiter who grew up, left, then came back, has the zeal of a missionary and the anger of someone who knows nothing he says can make a lick of difference. So this narrative of connected essayish accounts doesn't offer a solution as much as a passionate sermon of rubbing-your-face-in-it. But if one can't offer a solution, at least a writer can take a reader to the ground level that's often overlooked by those more focused on the big picture.

Most of these chapters originally appeared as newspaper reportage that LeDuff has fleshed out in more detail. That's not a problem, and he's done a good job of connecting all the anecdotes together so it reads as a consistent narrative. LeDuff is both primary character and narrator, and his strong, sometimes strident, voice carries the story along.

His 'characters,' police, firemen, occasional politicians, are of the tough-as-nails variety. I don't think the 'good guys' will mind their portrayals, even if they are a little over-the-top at times. With that, they seem to be treated fairly and honestly and their stories are not exploited for casual emotional gain.

The villains come across as slothful, incompetent and venal - all believable politicians and hacks.

It's four stars mostly because it's one-note at times. The stories are generally depressing and terrible, just like Detroit life, and there's not too many bright spots. Hard to love a book like that - but LeDuff's great writing style and powerful storytelling makes it easy to like. Any fan of Hunter Thompson will appreciate his take-no-prisoners literary approach.

I can't imagine liking LeDuff if I met him. I feel like he'd be an overpowering personality interested in what people have to say only as long as it's interesting to him. But that sort of focus on the "people as story" is how you end up with a strong piece of reportage like this. Tell the story, don't spare the feelings, and if it's harsh and ugly, people need to suck it up and learn a few things.

Blisteringly Honest
By Shlok Vaidya
I've read and written a lot about how America is dying. Regulatory capture, Wall Street, global arbitrage and deviant entrepreneurs collaborated to massacre the middle class.

But I always came at it from the perspective that the country is mid-collapse. That we still have time. That we can still swing the wheel and, for the most part, make it through. Sure, we'll pay $8 for a gallon of gas, we'll overpay for armies of contractors we don't need, but we will make it through. We're America after all.

Charlie LeDuff convinced me we may be too late. The book is aptly titled, Detroit: An American Autopsy. What if the land of the free, of prosperity, of two cars and a picket fence succumbed to the corrupt, the incompetent, the immoral?

He describes the imbeciles that run Detroit - not just its corrupt, race-baiting politicians, but also the evil puppet masters, the CEOs, that pulled their strings. He takes us on a journey through those we abandoned on the front line, one he describes as a "landscape of fire and human failing." We watch them live, fight, and die. He talks to the workers in factories, once producing subprime mortgages, now reduced to relabeling screws. He speaks with the mothers of the dead. We walk with him as he tries to make change, failing more often than not. His own life is inexorably tied into that of his failed city, so we feel his guilt, his family's mourning, the pain of finding work, the toll it takes.

He writes like Naipaul. Blisteringly honest. Solid, real flow.

And it presents the viewpoint that we're not careening into failure. We're already there. Ours is a state soon to be hollowed out by failed cities. America was murdered. What we live in is fundamentally different from what we had. We're in the middle of launching what is new. Its time to approach it that way.

Regardless of whether you believe in American decline or not, this book presents a compelling, unflinching perspective that is worth reading.
