The stories are based on the author’s boyhood experiences growing up at No. 73 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, Guyana in the 1950’s and 1960’s. They are a reflection of what life was like for a young boy back in those days in what was then British Guiana. The stories are based on real events that took place at that time.

About the Author
Dr. Gulmahamad received a BSc in Agricultural Biology from California State University, Pomona in 1972. He obtained a PhD in Entomology from the University of California, Riverside in 1975. He taught at the University of Guyana from 1976 to 1977. He returned to California and worked for Terminix International as a Technical Specialist for 17 years. He is currently employed by the Los Angeles Unified School District as an Operations Training Specialist. Dr. Gulmahamad has written and published over 60 technical and scientific papers including two chapters in books.

Stories & Poems by a Guyanese Village Boy

is a series of 27 short stories and 17 poems set in colonial British Guiana (now Guyana) in the 1950's to 1960's.This book is a sentimental journey of the author's recollections of his life and experiences and the people of the community who were a part of that life.
The stories are based on real events that took place as the author was growing up as a boy in a village that was once called Clonbrook by the Dutch. I was born in No. 73 Village but now reside in Britain and I have been living there for a long time now. However, prior to moving away, I heard, or were told stories, of the kind of experiences that are described in this book. This book brought back sentimental memories of the innocent and simple way of life in a long ago and far away land. The stories tell of the innocence of the people, the simple pleasures of life, the hard work, and the neighbourly spirit of that local community. The author appeared to have had a good life there and despite being gone for a long time, still holds very fond memories of the place.
Mashing rice in Guyana on page 48 of the book was a touching experience being the daughter of a village rice farmer. Henceforth, every time I sit down to a meal of rice, I will have a greater appreciation of what is involved in bringing that commodity to my dinner table.
This book was an interesting, nostalgic, funny, sad, and thought-provoking read for me. It certainly brought back the memories. I recommend this book wholeheartedly particularly to people in the Guyanese diaspora. I hope the author will continue to produce other works of this nature which I await with eager anticipation.

Captivating.

For Guyanese to understand their history and knowledge of Guyana more books like this book shoud be
written. There is a wealth of information on how daily life was etched out by the Berbicians espescially the Indo-Guyanese.
The story on Soaking,Steaming, and Drying Paddy At The Mill will captivate you. The description on the animals, birds and insects
is so educational and worth reading. I remember my father would tell me of a special yellow head bird who used to frequent the rice
fields in their thousands when he was a small boy in the 1930s. But after the heavy spraying of DPT in the 1930s all these birds were wiped out.
This book will preserve a long lost story of the way it was in Guyana and should be a must read by every Guyanese and an interesting read for everyone.

About the Author
Christiane Demers is a Professor in the Department of Management at HEC Montr�al, where she has been teaching courses on organizational change theories, strategic change management and strategy for more than 15 years. She holds a Ph.D. in administration from HEC Montr�al and received her M.Sc. in communication from University of Montr�al. Her research focuses on organizational transformation, with particular emphasis on its links with strategic dynamics and communication processes. Another topic of interest is the evolution of the field of organizational change. She has published, both individually and collaboratively, a number of books and journal articles on these subjects, mostly in French, and has presented her work at conferences such as the Academy of Management and the Strategic Management Society.

Not Helpful for Organizational Change Research

I intended to use this text as a starting point for a literature review on "Organizational Change Models", but discovered that would not be possible. While the work does reference peer reviewed literature, it tends to classify models in a manner that is inconsistent with the body of peer reviewed literature. The in-text diagrams capture its essence- take a look at one and if after you feel this author presents information in a meaningful and organized way, buy the text. I however, will be throwing mine in the garbage.

Unfulfilled expectations

I was looking for and expecting a great review and synthesis of organizational change theories that would enhance graduate degree courses that I teach. I was rather disappointed. The author makes historical distinctions that have little of value by way of providing students with any practical means of comprehending and planning organizational change interventions.

Synthesis: Good starting point

Demers does for organizational change theories what Northouse does for leadership theories - provides a concise volume summarizing and synthesizing key organizational change theories. The historical account is useful in identifying key trends and historical perspectives on organizational change, in particular Demers noted her purpose as "situating the main theories of organizational change in a general historical context" (p. xiii). In so doing, Demers organizes the book into three parts:

1, Adaptation or Selection? - Do organizations really change?
2. Transformation or Evolution? - Is transformation always revolutionary?
3. Natural evolution or Social dynamic? How do organizations renew themselves?

I read about the various theories here to get the overview, key thinker, terms, etc. and then research further to learn more. I should say this is my learning style for any new field of research, I tend to read a synthesis to get the broad gist and then dig deeper. An excellent bibliography is included!

Critiques to consider for a later edition - Consider using a consistent structure within each chapter to facilitate a reader's comparison/contrast (between theories) and to perhaps given on the selected content make this more useful and practical for the reader. For example, see Northouse - His chapters include: Description, Key Studies, Key Findings, Strengths, Criticisms, Application, Instruments, and References. It's a very useful reference book. Or maybe Demers just writes another book (smile)....

Excellent introduction to a difficult, and timely, topic.

An excellent update to the previous version, I use this text every semester with my Intercultural Communication courses. The text provides both an excellent introduction to core concepts, and additional readings from other authors to provide greater depth in key areas. A prior reviewer said that there were a lot of generalizations - which is true of every Intercultural text I have ever seen. And I have read all that I can find, on Amazon or elsewhere. Looks like they only read the first chapter.

I highly recommend this text to anyone looking for a good introduction to the field of intercultural communication, whether as an instructor or someone just interested in learning more about the world around them.

Weaver makes a bunch of assumptions and broad generalization. Some info was good (based on Hall). Otherwise, Weaver states nothing new, except for his unqualified statements. Worst book I have ever read.

Good read, horrible formating (Kindle edition)

I am a big Iris Johansen fan and I have also enjoyed her books co-written with Roy and when I saw Deadly Visions I had to give it a go.
The story is well put together and the characters are interesting enough to keep things rolling though it is not the quality that you find in more seasoned writers... (it is ironic that I should say that because I could not write a novel to save my life)

If you are looking to get this for your Kindle I would pass and go borrow it from the library. The formatting is horrible, wordsruntogether, and it looks like it is a bad OCR scan since words like "well" become "we11" and the like.

If you can get the paperback I say go for it, you will enjoy it. If you are going to read it on the Kindle... pass

A very exciting police procedural

A serial killer in Atlanta has murdered six high profile individuals. The athlete, attorney, college president, newspaper columnist, public relations firm owner, and former deputy mayor all complained of hearing voices that no one else heard. After they died, the police saw the same symbol marked on their chests. The police don't have a clue as to the identity of the killer so when psychic Monica Gaines offers her services to the police department, City Councilman Edward Tallman forces them to use her.
Atlanta police detective Joe Bailey works in the bunco squad and is well known for debunking paranormal cons. He is assigned to work with homicide so he can make sure that the psychic isn't pulling any con. He doesn't believe in the paranormal. When Monica's clothing spontaneously combusts and she has the serial killer's mark on her Joe is still looking for a rational explanation. When Joe hears the voice of his dead wife and lifts her prints in his home, his belief system get rattled. Still he is determined to find out who is doing these things and how it is being done.
DEADLY VISIONS is a very exciting police procedural with just the right touch of romance which is not at all surprising since the author's mother is the New York Times best-selling author Iris Johansen. The protagonist is a single father nurturing his eleven-year-old daughter and that immediately endears him to the audience. Fans hope that the protagonist will give his former lover a chance at beginning a new relationship. The who-done-it is cleverly set up so that readers will finish the book in one sitting to see who is playing head games with Joe.

I find any book about the paranormal interesting , and this book did not disapoint. I liked how he used a lot of majic tricks as a form of use by charlitions with interesting explanations. It really makes u wonder if like people " Sandra Brown" ex. Is she really physical or just good at reading people? And the madem from New Jersey ? Again true or false? I wish I had the money to get a reading from them! Because if they are for real and they pick these things out of the air, how do they not go crezy?

A NOBEL-PRIZE WINNING PHYSICIST SUGGESTS, "I AM GOD"

Erwin Rudolf Josef Alexander Schr�dinger (1887-1961) was a Nobel Prize-winning Austrian physicist who is most noted for his contributions to quantum theory.

He begins the "What is Life?" book by stating, "How can the events in space and time which take place within the spatial boundary of a living organism be accounted for by physics and chemistry? The preliminary answer which this little book will endeavor to expound and establish can be summarized as follows: The obvious inability of present-day physics and chemistry to account for such events is no reason at all for doubting that they can be accounted for by those sciences." (Pg. 3-4)

Later, he states his "one general conclusions ... that, I confess, was my only motive for writing this book... living matter, while not eluding the 'laws of physics' as established up to date, is likely to involve 'other laws of physics' hitherto unknown, which, however, once they have been revealed, will form just as integral a part of this science as the former." (Pg. 72-73) But he adds, "we must be prepared to find [living matter] working in a manner that cannot be reduced to the ordinary laws of physics." (Pg. 81) He advises, "We must therefore not be discouraged by the difficulty of interpreting life by the ordinary laws of physics... We must be prepared to find a new type of physical law prevailing in it. Or are we to term it a non-physical, not to say a super-physical, law?" (Pg. 86)

He suggests, "What is the characteristic feature of life? When is a piece of matter said to be alive? When it goes on 'doing something,' moving, exchanging material with its environment, and so forth, and that for a much longer period of than we would expect an inanimate piece of matter to 'keep going' under similar circumstances." (Pg. 74) He adds, "What then is that precious something contained in our food which keeps us from death? That is easily answered... everything that is going on in Nature means an increase of the entropy of the part of the world where it is going on. Thus a living organism continually increases its entropy... and thus tends to approach the dangerous state of maximum entropy, which is death. It can only keep itself ... alive, by continually drawing something from its environment negative entropy... the essential thing in metabolism is that the organism succeeds in freeing itself from all the entropy it cannot help producing while alive." (Pg. 76)

He summarizes, "My body functions as a pure mechanism according to the Laws of Nature.. Yet I know, by incontrovertible direct experience, that I am directing its motions... in which case I feel and take full responsibility for them. The only possible inference from these two facts is, I think, that I... am an person, if any, who controls 'the motion of the atoms' according to the Laws of Nature... it is daring to give to this conclusion the simple wording that it requires. In Christian terminology to say: ‘Hence I am God Almighty' sounds both blasphemous and lunatic... In itself, the insight is not new. the earliest records to my knowledge date back to ... great early Upanishads the recognition ATHMAN = BRAHMAN... Again, the mystics of many centuries ... have described ... the unique experience of his or her life in terms that can be condensed in the phrase... I have become God." (Pg. 92-93)

In the "Mind and Matter" book, he says, "It would seem ... ridiculous, to think that the contemplating, conscious mind that alone reflects the becoming of the world ... should have appeared contingently, associated with a very special biological contraption which in itself quite obviously discharges the task of facilitating certain forms of life in maintaining themselves... forms of life that were late-comers and have been preceded by many others that maintained themselves without that particular contraption (a brain)... And before that happened, should it all have been a performance to empty stalls?... But a world existing for many millions of years without any mind being aware of it, contemplating it, is it anything at all? Has it existed?" (Pg. 146)

He concludes, "No personal god can form part of a world model that has only become accessible at the cost of removing everything personal from it. We know, when God is experienced, this is an event as real as an immediate sense perception or as one's own personality. Like them he must be missing in the space-time picture, I do not find God anywhere in space and time---that is what the honest naturalist tells you. For this he incurs blame from him in whose catechism is written: God is spirit." (Pg. 150)

This is a surprising book, that will perhaps be of most interest not to those studying physics, but those interested in mysticism and religious experience.

Thought Provoking & Inspiring Insights!

Becoming concludes the trilogy of books containing messages from an anonymous enlightened source, published by George Green (USAF, Retired). The "Handbook For The New Paradigm" trilogy, including the books Embracing the Rainbow (pt.2) and Becoming (pt.3) are an excellent overview of the current state of planetary affairs and the process of chaos and transformation that is materializing. These books impart a set of basic spiritual principles that explain how our reality manifests and how we can work within this framework to transcend the current paradigms and agendas playing out on Earth. This series is a true gem, with much wisdom and loving insights offered to those spiraling out of the current polarity games on Earth. I will add that these materials include both spiritual wisdom and an overview of the dark polarity history and agendas of manipulation on planet Earth. Some other writers, such as David Icke, William Bramley, & Zechariah Sitchin go into details about the history of alien interventions, including the unsettling details about reptilians and the elites offered by Icke. The Handbook for The New Paradigm trilogy alludes to these factors in a non-detailed process-oriented way, making them easier to digest and process in a spiritual framework. However, if you want more tangible confirmation of these issues you may wish to consult these other authors.

3rd book of the Handbook series. Continuation of your expansion in growth and happiness, and purpose. It will unlock the doors and free opportunity for you and all around you. I find all 3 handbooks read with the intent of self-empowerment will bring you closer to your guides "out there". The more you read it with that empowering intent, the more "they" can help you. Some excerpts from the 1st book are at soisness org.

My opinion after viewing some interviews of George Green is that they used a type of "voice to skull"* technology rather than a "channeling". George would hear a phone ringing and looking around for the phone, then remember, "Oh yeah, they're calling me." And then at the computer they'd tell him what to write and he'd type it in the computer.

I believe the authors of the Handbook are all of us, including our galactic brothers and sisters. It is a guidebook for life. I am very grateful for the gift of the Handbook for the New Paradigm.

*As a side note secret governments (alphabet soup agencies) have had and used and are using "voice to skull" technology since over 40 years, experimenting on unsuspecting "citizens", hence the "tin foil hats". They were not crazy. Government agencies have and continue to confiscate inventions in the name of "National Security" and then use them against the people. I call them "agents of chaos" because they seem intent on destroying lives and relationships. However the nefarious ones seem oblivious to the fact that the relationship(s) you gain with those who wrote these 3 books is untouchable. May the force be with you.

This book is a big fat, " where did I come from, why am I here...oh that's why" type of book. Strange things tend to happen to those in posession of this book, myself included. Wonderful, mysterious beautiful awakening events began to take place after I got my hands on this. If you have an open mind, prepare for it to be blasted open. If you don't....re-read previous sentence. And if you don't get the gist of this book, re-read the entire book again. This is my 3rd copy.

The United States has looked inward throughout most of its history, preferring to avoid "foreign entanglements," as George Washington famously advised. After World War II, however, Americans became more inclined to break with the past and take a prominent place on the world stage. Much has been written about the influential figures who stood at the center of this transformation, but remarkably little attention has been paid to Arthur H. Vandenberg (1884–1951), who played a crucial role in moving the nation from its isolationist past to an internationalist future.

Vandenberg served as a U.S. senator from Michigan from 1928 to 1951 and was known in his early career for his fervent anti-interventionism. After 1945, he became heavily involved in the establishment of the United Nations and was a key player in the development of NATO. As chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during 1947 and 1948, Vandenberg helped rally support for President Truman's foreign policy―including the Marshall Plan―and his leadership contributed to a short-lived era of congressional bipartisanship regarding international relations.

In The Conversion of Senator Arthur H. Vandenberg, Lawrence S. Kaplan offers the first critical biography of the distinguished statesman. He demonstrates how Vandenberg's story provides a window on the political and cultural changes taking place in America as the country assumed a radically different role in the world, and makes a seminal contribution to the history of U.S. foreign policy during the initial years of the Cold War.

Lawrence S. Kaplan is emeritus director of the Lyman L. Lemnitzer Center for NATO and European Union Studies at Kent State University and a professorial lecturer in history at Georgetown University. He is the author or editor of more than two dozen books, including NATO Divided, NATO United: The Evolution of an Alliance and NATO 1948: The Birth of the Transatlantic Alliance.

A Needed Appraisal of a Key Republican Foreign Policy Leader

Kaplan draws on his long career writing about international affairs to offer a useful biography of Senator Vandenberg, one of the most important voices for a bipartisan, internationalist foreign policy in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. This book fills an important niche for the study of American foreign policy in the Twentieth Century, and contributes to the understanding of one of the key architects of Republican mainstream orthodoxy on international relations. For too long Vandenberg's critical contribution to the postwar global system, and to the Republican shift away from isolationism, has received inadequate attention. This biography is most timely in light of current debates on the role of the United States in the world and the challenge of sustaining democratic capitalism. I found it to be a good read, with interesting perspectives on the founding of the United Nations and on Senator Vandenberg's dark horse presidential candidacies during the New Deal.

An important book on foreign policy and the U.S. Senate

An important new book on an important United States Senator - Michigan Republican Arthur Vandenberg. Lawrence Kaplan traces Vandenberg's evolution from a committed isolationist to an influential internationalist, a "conversion" that provided Vandenberg an unusual, even unprecedented, role in helping shape U.S. foreign policy from Pearl Harbor to the birth of NATO.

In an age when bipartisanship seems to be a quaint relic of the past, Kaplan's book reminds us that Vandenberg could be a very partisan Republican, but still find a way to cooperate with Democratic presidents on foreign policy issues. More American politicians would do well to emulate Vandenberg's admonition that partisan politics should stop at the waters edge. This is an important addition to the scholarship of U.S. foreign policy in the 20th Century, as well as the history of the Senate.
